Juniors teaching sessionNew for 2017
We will be launching a new Juniors Facebook page this year. This will provide a quick informal route for us to share news & information and extend the Junior Group community between sessions. It is our intention to have both a closed area for members and an open area to promote the group.

2017 sees the first full year of the new Training Barn and we intend to make full use of this great new facility. Watch out for the new beach and launching area coming soon adjacent to the barn.

Our exciting and popular Weymouth trip is planned for 9th and 10th September – more info to follow soon.

About us
Juniors is run by the parents, and takes sailors from the age of seven. We use the RYA training structure, but add in plenty of fun, to give our sailors not just a good set of sailing skills, but also a love of sailing that will last a lifetime. Once children have passed all four junior stages (which usually takes several seasons) they can progress to the Youth Development Squad (YDS), where more experienced sailors can hone their skills, often in racing situations. We have a great fleet of junior boats including; Opies, RS Tera’s, RS Quba’s, RS Feva’s, as well as access to the Clubs Training fleet of Comet Trios and a 2000.

Our programme
We run sessions once or twice a month from March through to November. Our sessions start at 10.00am, with the children changed and ready to go, and carry on until about 3.30pm, when we come ashore to de-brief the children and de-rig the boats. We have a cooked lunch between sessions to refuel the children, ready for a busy afternoon. The lunch price is included in the session price for Juniors, and is free for instructors, but I’m afraid we must make a small charge for parents who would like to share the cooked meal to keep us within budget. Pre-booking is necessary, so we know how much food to cook!

What role for parents?
Parental help is vital in all aspects of the Junior Group. Whilst we expect the young sailors to learn how to rig boats themselves, help is always needed in rigging/de-rigging, moving of boats on and off the water and ensuring that children are happy and safe. Help is also needed on the water for instructing and driving the coaching boats. If you are an experienced sailor and wish to help instruct, or you are a qualified safety boat driver, please talk to me at the club, or email juniors@whitefriarssc.org.

The other area where help is extremely important (and gratefully received by hungry children) is in the preparation, serving and clearing up of lunch. There will always be experienced volunteers to guide you in any of the tasks, so don't worry about being dropped in the deep end.

Lunch Rota - you know what to do!

How do I book a session?
We have a maximum of 40 spaces for the sessions, so it is vital to get your booking done as early as possible to avoid disappointment. The latest that you can book is one week ahead so that we can finalise arrangements for instructors, catering etc.

Session prices for 2017 will be £15 (held at 2016 levels). All sessions will need to be booked through Web Collect once you have joined up to Junior Group. NB Sessions must be booked at least a week in advance.
